Forms of a Verb with Sentence Examples

The words which denote the happening of an event or an action are called verbs. Based on the conditions how the verbs are placed in a sentence, there can be 5 forms.

1. Root / Base Form ( v1 )

It is the normal form of a verb without any prefix or suffix. v1 form is generally used with I, We, You, They and Plural Nouns. For example:

a. May I come (v1in Sir?

b. They sleep (v1) late at night.
c. Boys like to play (v1) PUBG.

2. Third Person Singular Form ( v1 + s/es )

It is the form of a verb with (s/es) as the suffix. v1 + s/es form is generally used with He, She, It and Singular Nouns. For example:

a. Does (v1 + s/esit need that much attention?

b. He sleeps (v1 + s/es) late at night.
c. The Earth revolves (v1 + s/es) around the sun.

3. Continuous Form ( v1 + ing )

It is the form of a verb with (ing) as the suffix. v1 + ing form is generally used after an auxiliary verb. For example:

a. John is playing (v1 + ing) basketball.

b. He is wearing (v1 + ing) a red T-shirt.
c. London Bridge is falling (v1 + ing) down.

4. Past Form ( v2 )

It is the form of a verb used to represent Past Tense.

If it’s a Regular Verb, (d/ed) is used as the suffix. If it’s an Irregular Verb, the v2 form may take a different shape.

  • What is a Regular Verb?
    • A verb whose v2 form can be made by combining the v1 form with the suffix (d/ed).
    • add + ed = added
      bake + d = baked
      call + ed = called
  • What is an Irregular Verb?
    • A verb whose v2 form cannot be made by using the v1 form + d/ed.
    • (v1) draw ⇋ drew (v2)
      (v1) eat ⇋ ate (v2)
      (v1) fly ⇋ flew (v2)
Examples of v2 form (Regular Verbs):

a. I missed (v2) the class last week.

b. We liked (v2) the movie very much.
c. Last Year, Alexa travelled (v2) to Germany.

Examples of v2 form (Irregular Verbs):

a. The princess came (v2) to the palace.

b. They did (v2) a lot of shopping.
c. I forgot (v2) my wallet.

5. Past Participle Form ( v3 )

It is the form of a verb used to represent Past Participle Tense.

If it’s a Regular Verb, (d/ed) is used as the suffix. If it’s an Irregular Verb, the v3 form may take a different shape.

  • What is a Regular Verb?
    • A verb whose v3 form can be made by combining the v1 form with the suffix (d/ed).
    • marry + ed = married
      believe + d = believed
      cheer + ed = cheered
  • What is an Irregular Verb?
    • A verb whose v3 form cannot be made by using the v1 form + d/ed.
    • (v1) draw ⇋ drawn (v3)
      (v1) eat ⇋ eaten (v3)
      (v1) fly ⇋ flown (v2)

Examples of v3 form (Regular Verbs):

a. Rosy baked (v3) a chocolate cake on Sunday.

b. We made (v3) ourselves clear before the teacher.
c. The Prime Minister travelled (v3) to the USA.

Examples of v3 form (Irregular Verbs):

a. The princess has come (v3) to the palace.

b. They have done (v3) a lot of shopping.
c. I have forgotten (v3) about my past.
