Rules of Using Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Past Tense is used to determine the action of a verb that began in the past. Based on the formation of the sentence, It can also be used to describe the moment that took place near the present time.

 

Past Perfect Continuous Tense takes the structure:

a. Ram + had been + going + to the market.
b. They + had been + sleeping + early at night.
c. I + had been + eating + the cake.

Here, ( v1 + ing ) represents the Continuous form of the verb. Read Now:

Rule 1 – Action began in the Past; and continued

Past Perfect Continuous Tense is used for an action that began before a certain point in the past and continued up to that time.

 

For Example:

  1. She had been caressing the cat.
  2. My teacher had been teaching History.
  3. My younger brother had been disturbing me.

Rule 2 – Present Perfect Continuous to Past Perfect Continuous

When the reporting verb in the direct speech is in past tense and the reported speech is in present perfect continuous tense, then the present perfect continuous tense is changed into past perfect continuous tense in the indirect speech.

 

For Example:

  1. He said, “He has been reading the novel”. (Direct)
    He said that He had been reading the novel. (Indirect)
  2. Ram wrote, “He has been managing the firm alone”. (Direct)
    Ram wrote that He had been managing the firm alone. (Indirect)

Rule 3 – Past Continuous to Past Perfect Continuous

When the reporting verb in the direct speech is in past tense and the reported speech is in past continuous tense, then the past continuous tense is changed into past perfect continuous tense in the indirect speech.

 

For Example:

  1. The criminal said, “I was robbing the bank”. (Direct)
    The criminal said that He had been robbing the bank. (Indirect)
  2. She said to me, “Gracy was eating an ice-cream”. (Direct)
    She said to me that Gracy had been eating an ice-cream. (Indirect)
